You've probably seen "GOTS certified" on clothing labels and sustainability pages. But what does it actually mean? And why does it matter when you're buying a t-shirt?
Here's a clear, no-nonsense explanation — because understanding your clothes is part of wearing them well.
What GOTS Stands For
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It's the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. Unlike certifications that only cover the raw material, GOTS covers the entire supply chain — from the field where the cotton is grown all the way to the finished garment.
That means every step is audited: farming, ginning, spinning, weaving, dyeing, cutting, sewing, and packaging. If a product carries a GOTS label, every single stage has been independently verified.
What GOTS Actually Requires
To earn GOTS certification, a product must meet strict criteria at every point in its production:
- Organic fibre content: At least 70% certified organic natural fibres (cotton, wool, linen, etc.). For the "organic" label, it's at least 95%.
- No harmful chemicals: Prohibited substances include bleaches, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and many synthetic dyes commonly used in conventional textile production.
- Wastewater treatment: All wet processing facilities must treat wastewater before discharge.
- Social criteria: Workers must receive fair wages, safe conditions, and freedom of association. Child labour is strictly prohibited.
- Independent verification: Every facility in the supply chain is audited annually by an approved third-party certifier.
Why It Matters for Your T-Shirt
Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world. It uses roughly 16% of the world's insecticides despite covering only 2.5% of cultivated land. Those chemicals don't stay on the farm — they enter waterways, affect surrounding communities, and leave residues in finished garments.
GOTS certification eliminates this. The cotton in a GOTS certified t-shirt was grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, processed without harmful dyes or finishes, and produced in a facility that treats its workers and wastewater properly.
For you as the wearer: softer fabric, no chemical residues against your skin, and the confidence that your purchase didn't cause harm to get to you.
GOTS vs Other Certifications
OCS (Organic Content Standard) only verifies the organic content of the fibre — it doesn't cover processing or social criteria. It's a weaker standard.
BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) improves conventional cotton farming practices but doesn't require organic methods. Still better than nothing, but not organic.
GOTS is the most comprehensive standard available for organic textiles. If you see it, trust it.
GOTS at LEBASQ
LEBASQ's Steve's Crew and James' V Neck ranges are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. Every piece in those ranges carries that certification from field to finished tee.
If you're building a more conscious wardrobe — or you simply want fabric that's genuinely better for your skin and the planet — GOTS is the certification worth looking for.
